Abstract: Concentration camp systems are a ubiquitous yet understudied form of repression that have been used across all regime types for more than 100 years. Intended to repress and detain civilians, concentration camp systems can be employed against a variety of different groups including dissidents, refugees, minoritized groups, and “undesirables”.

Abstract: Although the Nazi Holocaust provides the most expansive and resonant example of concentration camps in popular commentary and social science research, recent revelations regarding the detention and abuse of migrants on the southern US border and minoritized Uighurs in camps in Xinjiang, China, demonstrate the persistence of this technology of mass violence.
